You can update the previous DX Engineering antenna info - DX Engineering now offers a model DXE-60VA-1 monoband, high performance 60 meter vertical. They also have a model DXE-AOK-60M 60 meter add-on kit for Hustler BTV-series multiband trap vertical antennas. See the DX Engineering web site: http://www.dxengineering.com. Al - K8EUR |
A Beverage is very simple to construct. It is typically a wire 1-2 wavelengths long, 2-10 feet above ground with a noninductive termination resistor at the far end (toward the direction you wish to receive), a matching transformer at the near end (to match the Beverage's ~500 ohm impedance to coax) with 3-5' ground rods at both ends. On 60m, one wavelength is about 180 ft, so you need this much space to run a Beverage in your desired direction. Terminated Beverages are also non-resonant, so they will work well on 40m and 80m also. If you wanted one to cover 80m-40m, it should be about 250 feet long for best results on all bands. The longer you make Beverages the more directive they are (up to about 3 wavelengths maximum when other problems come into play). A Beverage is not used for transmitting, so you need to connect one to your RX antenna input to ensure you don't accidentally transmit into it (which might destroy the typical 2W termination and/or matching transformer). Beverages are also somewhat lossy so you may want to turn your RX preamp on or use an external preamp. This is probably not truly necessary on 60m but some like to add enough gain to equalize signal strength on the Beverage to your TX antenna so you can give meaningful reports. I have kits with matching transformer and noninductive 470 ohm resistors that I will sell with simple instructions postpaid for $10 (USA).
